Why is research on child abuse and neglect important?
-
Child abuse and neglect is known to be an underlying cause of many individual and societal problems such as delayed development, poor academic performance, delinquency, depression, alcoholism, substance abuse, deviant sexual behaviors, and domestic and criminal violence.
- Child maltreatment exacts heavy economic costs in terms of increased demand for foster care and other child welfare services, mental health services, law enforcement and legal services, and correctional institutions.
In addition, it has been estimated (Daro, 1988) that the future lost productivity of severely abused children is $658-$1300 million annually.
