The Social Tasks of Friendship
Social skills interventions addressing friendship may be an important strategy for reducing aggression and violence in children and youth. In this workshop, Dr. Steven Asher, Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at Duke University, discussed research aimed at building a foundation for future friendship interventions. This workshop was co-sponsored by the IPRC and the UNC School of Social Work.

Preventing Concussion in Sport: From Lab to Law
IPRC Core faculty member Kevin Guskiewicz and Mr. Robert Gfeller of the Mathew Alan Gfeller Foundation discussed the significance of sport-related concussion and its prevention. Their discussion highlighted the recent legislation of North Carolina’s Gfeller-Waller Concussion Awareness Act, signed into law in June 2011.

The Epidemic of Prescription Drug Poisoning in North Carolina
Sponsored by IPRC, this panel discussion examined the growing epidemic of prescription drug abuse and unintentional poisoning in the state of North Carolina. Panelists included Marsha Ford, M.D., Director of the Carolinas Poison Center; Scott Proescholdbell, injury epidemiologist with the N.C Department of Health and Human Services; and Kay Sanford, epidemiologist.
